Members of the Fourth Generation
27. NANCY(4) F. GADDIS (THOMAS3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born February 20, 1805 (possibly 1802?), in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and died February 26, 1891. She married DANIEL C. ASHBY March 05, 1829 in Clinton County, Ohio.
i. MARGARET EMILY(5) ASHBY, b. February 15, 1843; d. December 22, 1922; married HARRISON BAKER, September 27, 1863, Appanoosa County, Iowa.
28. RUTH ANN(4) GADDIS (THOMAS3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1804 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. She married DAVID ASHBY February 08, 1825 in Clinton County, Ohio.
Notes for David ASHBY:
Census Information:
1860 US Federal Census for P.O. Knoxville, Orange Township, Knox County, Illinois
David ASHBY, 61, b. New Jersey
Ruth A., wife, 56, b. Pennsylvania
Martha, daughter, 22, b. Illinois
Silas, son, 20, b. Illinois
Clarissa, daughter, 17, b. Illinois
Helen, daughter, 16, b. Illinois
I believe I found this family in the 1850 Illinois census for Knox County. David was given as being 52 and born in KENTUCKY. Ruth was 47 and born in Pennsylvania. Mary was 18, Nancy was 16, and Martha was 13. All three were stated as being born in Pennsylvania. Silas was 10, Clarissa was 7, and a child named Minerva was 4. All of these children were born in Illinois.
i. MARY(5) ASHBY, b. Abt. 1832, Pennsylvania.
ii. NANCY ASHBY, b. Abt. 1834, Pennsylvania.
iii. MARTHA ASHBY, b. 1838, Pennsylvania or Illinois.
Notes for Martha ASHBY:
In the 1860 Illinois census, this name looks like it might be Agatha.
iv. SILAS ASHBY, b. 1840, Illinois.
v. CLARISSA ASHBY, b. 1843, Illinois.
vi. HILLIN ASHBY, b. 1849, Illinois.
Notes for Hillin ASHBY:
In the 1850 Illinois census, there is no child by this name. However, there is a child named Minerva born about 1846. In the 1860 Illinois census, this name looks like it might be Helen. Also in this census, this person was given as being 16 years old which would place her date of birth about 1844 not 1849. I believe that these children maybe one and the same. They may have used middle names or nicknames on one of the censuses and the differences in birth dates may be enumeration error. However, neither Scott BAKER nor Joseph McNEMAR (my main secondary resources in GADDIS research) have a Minerva listed and both have Hillin. Also, neither one of them makes mention of the daughters Mary and Nancy.
29. JOHN JENKINS(4) GADDIS (THOMAS3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born April 19, 1807 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and died December 15, 1890 in Linneus, Linn County, Missouri. He married HANNAH SCROGGY October 01, 1829 in Warren County, Ohio, daughter of JOHN SCROGGY and SARAH WILSON. My GADDIS line.

John GADDIS, born 1808, Ohio - F&M b. Ohio - farmer
Annie, wife, born 1809, New Jersey - F&M b. New Jersey
Emma, daughter, born 1850, Indiana
In the information that I received from Barbara DONALDSON, John was listed as John J. (Henry?) GADDIS. In reading through several articles about the GADDIS family, I came across John's middle name as being Jenkins. This makes sense as his paternal grandmother's maiden name was JENKINS.
i. SARAH J.(5) GADDIS, b. before 1836, Ohio; married JOHN QUINCY ADAMS BANTA, October 23, 1869.
Notes for Sarah J. GADDIS:
The marriage of Sarah J. to BANTA may have been her second marriage. In the 1850 Wayne County, Indiana census, Sarah J. is not mentioned in the household of John and Hannah GADDIS. The most obvious reason for this is that she may already have been married by this time. If so, then her marriage in 1869 to BANTA would have to be her second marriage. We know that Sarah J. was a daughter of John and Hannah because she is mentioned in John's will as Sarah J. BANTA. The other possibility is that the marriage date of 1869 is in error and her marriage to BANTA happened prior to 1850. I believe I may have found two more listings for Sarah, one in the 1880 Indiana census for Hendricks County with her husband, a physician, and the other in the Civil War Pension index for Sarah G. Banta, a widow, filed in October of 1882 in Missouri. If her husband died, Sarah might have gone to her parents' home in Linneus, Missouri.
ii. ELIZABETH GADDIS, b. about 1836, Ohio; married JOHN A. THOMPSON, November 24, 1857.
iii. MARY JANE GADDIS, b. about 1838, Ohio; married JOHN SIMEON CHANEY, April 22, 1855.
Notes for Mary Jane GADDIS:
Joseph McNEMAR gives Mary Jane's date of birth as 1835 rather than 1838.
iv. RUTH ANN (ALICE) GADDIS, b. about 1839, Indiana; married WILLIAM M. PRICE, September 20, 1859.
v. MARGARET ELLEN GADDIS, b. 1840, Indiana; married JESSE C. BLINN, November 15, 1864.
vi. MARTHA A. GADDIS, b. about 1843, Indiana; married JESSE MOORE, 1870.
48. vii. GEORGE W. GADDIS, b. May 16, 1845, Wayne County, Indiana; d. December 01, 1915, Lockesburg, Sevier County, Arkansas.
viii. AMANDA GADDIS, b. about 1847, Indiana; married WILLIAM W. BRINKLEY.
Notes for Amanda GADDIS:
Joseph McNEMAR gives Amanda's date of birth as 1849.
ix. EMMA GADDIS, b. about 1850, Indiana; married a man named HANKS.
30. JAMES(4) GADDIS (THOMAS3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1810 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He married MARGARET WONDERLAND August 18, 1835 in Clinton County, Ohio (Source: Clinton County Probate Court Records, Vol. 3, p. 77.).

iii. SARAH A. GADDIS, b. 1842, Illinois.
iv. ELIZABETH GADDIS, b. Abt. 1843, Illinois.
v. THOMAS GADDIS, b. 1845, Illinois.
Notes for Thomas GADDIS:
On the 1860 Illinois census for Knoxville, Knox County, Thomas was listed as Francis. From this I would assume that his name was either Thomas Francis or Francis Thomas.
vi. MATILDA GADDIS, b. about 1849, Illinois; d. before 1860.
vii. MARY E. GADDIS, b. 1853, Illinois.
viii. CHARLES A. GADDIS, b. 1857, Illinois.
31. JONATHAN(4) GADDIS (WILLIAM3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born February 12, 1801 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and died December 02, 1863. He married ANNA DISBROW April 14, 1825 in Clinton County, Ohio, daughter of BANKS D. DISBROW.
Notes for Jonathan GADDIS:
I received information about this family from several secondary sources. From the first source (which is reflected in this file), I question the birth dates for several of the children: Allen, James, and Harriet. Each of these individuals has only the birth year listed and each is followed by a supposed sibling born in the same year. Are these approximate dates, twin siblings, or duplicate children?
My second source, Joesph McNEMAR, lists the children and their birth dates as follows:
Banks Davis GADDIS, b. July 15, 1821, Ohio--d. April 17, 1901
Eliza Ann GADDIS, b. 1830
William Allen GADDIS, b. 1833, Clinton Co., Ohio--d. Altamont, Kansas
John Piers GADDIS, b. 1836
Levi Duffy GADDIS, b. 1839--d. Aurora, Nebrska
Jacob Wesley GADDIS, b. 1841
Henry Lewis GADDIS, b. 1843
Willis C. GADDIS, b. 1846--not listed as a child of this couple by Scott BAKER.
Hannah Sophia GADDIS, b. 1848
Morgan Oscar GADDIS, b. 1849
49. i. BANKS DAVIS(5) GADDIS, b. July 15, 1826, Clinton County, Ohio; d. April 17, 1901.
ii. ELIZA ANN GADDIS, b. October 07, 1830.
iii. ALLEN GADDIS, b. 1833.
Notes for Allen GADDIS:
Allen may be a "phantom" child created by the use of a middle name on a census. He is not listed as a child of this couple in the information supplied by Joseph McNEMAR, though Joseph did give the name Allen as the middle name of William GADDIS.
50. iv. WILLIAM ALLEN GADDIS, b. April 29, 1833, Clinton County, Ohio; d. Altamont, Kansas.
v. JAMES GADDIS, b. 1836.
Notes for James GADDIS:
James may be a "phantom" child created by a census enumeration error. He is not listed as a child of this couple in the information suplied by Joseph McNEMAR.
vi. JOHN PEAIRS GADDIS, b. June 03, 1836.
Notes for John Peairs GADDIS:
In the information supplied by Joesph McNEMAR, John's middle name is spelled Piers.
51. vii. LEVI DUFFY GADDIS, b. July 29, 1840; d. Aurora, Nebraska.
viii. JACOB WESLEY GADDIS, b. August 15, 1841.
ix. HENRY LEWIS GADDIS, b. July 29, 1843.
x. HARRIET GADDIS, b. 1848.
Notes for Harriet GADDIS:
Harriet may be a "phantom" child created by a census enumeration error. I believe that she may actually be the child named Hannah Sophia. Harriet is not listed as a child of this couple in information received from Joseph McNEMAR.
xi. HANNAH SOPHIA GADDIS, b. August 23, 1848.
xii. OSCAR MORGAN GADDIS, b. December 04, 1851.
Notes for Oscar Morgan GADDIS:
His name may have been Morgan Oscar and he may have been born in 1849. This information supplied by Joseph McNEMAR.
32. ELISHA PEAIRS(4) GADDIS (WILLIAM3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born February 20, 1811, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He married LYDIA MACY August 25, 1840 in Randolph County, Indiana.
52. i. THOMAS WILLIAM(5) GADDIS, b. July 16, 1841, Randolph County, Indiana.
ii. SARAH E. GADDIS, b. October 17, 1843, Randolph County, Indiana; married HENRY E. HARRIS, October 08, 1865, Randolph County, Indiana.
Marriage Notes for Sarah GADDIS and Henry HARRIS:
Information about this marriage was taken from material supplied by Scott BAKER. Sarah and her brother, Thomas William, were married on the same day by the same Justice of the Peace. Thomas married a HARRIN and Sarah married a HARRIS. I'm wondering if these were actually siblings and their names were simply misspelled.

38. LOUISA(4) STOCKDALE (ELIZABETH3 GADDIS, JOHN2, WILLIAM1). She married ALLEN FARQUHAR.
Notes for Allen FARQUHAR:
Scott BAKER gave this individual's name given as Lewis C. FARQUHAR. The use of Lewis C. FARQUHAR may have been a typographical error. Louisa STOCKDALE FARQUHAR's daughter, Camilla, married a man by the name of Lewis C. WALKER so it is easy to see how this mistake might have happened. The name Allen was supplied by Joseph McNEMAR.
