Siblings of the Second Generation

2.  JOHN(2) GADDIS (William1) was born October 07, 1741, in Frederick County, Virginia, and died April 12, 1827, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  He married SARAH JENKINS on May 22, 1768, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, daughter of JACOB JENKINS and ELIZABETH ROGERSMy GADDIS line comes down directly from John.

Notes for John GADDIS:
This quote was found in the "Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County Pennsylvania, Volumes I-II:"

"The date of the coming of John Gaddis [to Fayette county] is given as 1785, but this is the date of his land warrant in North Union township, and he had been in the county at a date as early as 1780.  He settled in North Union township in 1785, where he purchased about three hundred acres of land with an allowance of six per cent for roads.  The tract joined that of his brother Robert, giving the locality the name of "Gaddistown."  His warrant was dated February 7, 1785, and a patent was granted March 30, 1786.  He purchased a tract of forty and a half acres adjoining "Gaddistown," which he named "Oxford," and another of sixteen acres called "Cambridge."  Warrants for these were issued March 6, 1794.  He was one of the first justices of the peace and a member of the Great Bethel Baptist Church of Uniontown, a prominent active worker holding the office of deacon.  He survived his wife, Sarah, twenty-five years, she dying on January 7, 1802."

John was an attorney, a justice of the peace, and a ranger in the Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War.  He is buried in Great Bethel Baptist Cemetery.

Notes for Sarah JENKINS:
In May 1998, I found evidence that, at one point in time, Sarah was a member of the Society of Friends (the Quakers) in Frederick County, Virginia.  According to the Hopewell Memberships of 1759-1776, Sarah was disowned for marrying contrary to discipline.  This was recorded on October 3, 1768.

There also seems to be some questions as to Sarah's year of birth.  It may have been in February of 1750/51.  Sarah is buried in Great Bethel Baptist Cemetery.
