  The Pottery Pair

When man turned from a hunting and gathering way of life to a sedentary lifestyle based on agriculture, he soon discovered a need to store grain and water.  The baskets, leather pouches, and wooden containers of his nomadic life did not meet this need.  So, the art and craft of pottery was born.  With earthenware vessels he was able to store grain against famine and water against drought.  Many of the ancient cultures of the Southwest were first identified and known by the pottery they made.  These two plain jars could have belonged to any of these long ago cultures.
